Mini Golf in Minnesota in 2021: Top 5 Most Unique Courses

While our home state of Minnesota is chock full of quality options for traditional mini golf, the land of long winters and quite a few lakes has a number of distinctive courses that provide putting and visuals you’re not likely to find at your run of the mill courses. In fact, only 2 of the 5 courses on this list we made for 2021 have the standard 18-holes. In no specific order, we’ve curated a list of courses that will excite, surprise and challenge you. If you’re adventurous and want to try something new, we’ve got you covered.

  1. Big Stone Mini Golf and Sculpture Garden (Mound) – Outdoors / Metro-ish
Not only a location of our first date (and then later our wedding) but stands as a one of one course that blurs the line between sculpture garden and putting course.

2. Centennial Lakes Putting Course (Edina)Outdoors / Metro

Real grass, full-on sandtraps, small ponds of water, and 18 holes that range in length from 50 to over 100+ feet. Meant to be played by kids and adults over the age of 8 and one of the most challenging courses to play with a putter we’ve seen in all of our travels. As we’ve become more competitive, this course has moved up in our personal rankings for revisiting in the summer. An Additional 9 hole Scottish Links courses added in 2020.

3. Can Can Wonderland (St. Paul) – Indoors / Metro

One-of-a-kind whimsical indoor art mini golf, bar, and arcade. Many unique takes and twists on the game. Feels more like a journey through installation art with a ball. Light on putting but like nothing else we’ve seen.

4. Dark Moon Mega Golf (Cross Lake, MN)Outdoors / Outstate

9 holes with 3 pin placements make for 27 different ways to play this distinct putting space Up North. Design and creator Mike Stone has created a course with super high replayability and a great test for your putting skills.

5. Walker Art Center Skline Mini Golf (Minneapolis) –  Outdoors / Metro

Mostly annual temporary artist-designed colorful course overlooking downtown Minneapolis at a world-renowned modern art museum. We love all of the variations of the course in 2021, 2019, and 2018 on the rooftop and glad that this has been an annual summer play option since 2013. We’ve contributed to this course on numerous occasions but love playing it as much as we love looking at it.
