A History of Spring Lake Park Amusement / Sir Goony Golf – Part 8: Classic North Course

by Tom Loftus (aka Mr. Tee)

Now onto my favorite and the most memorable of the 3 courses at Goony Golf of Spring Lake Park, Executive Course 1. I prefer calling it the North Course. It stood out as clear as day from the adjacent Highway 10. The colorful 20 foot tall T-Rex was a beacon enticing suburban travelers into a special mini golf course. Growing up, I remember passing by it often en route to school or the mall with family; rarely stopping to play. Till the closing, a magical aura surrounded the space

Following the template designated by the Sir Goony Golf franchise, the 18 holes lean heavily on oversized fantastical animals and fairy tale characters. Similar to the South Course, all of the holes were able to be completed in 2 to 3 strokes and in most cases, a hole-in-one was achievable. The condition of the turf and obstacles could significantly change the level of difficulty. The oversized kangaroo, Leapin’ Lena, felt near impossible at times. A steep climb and a poorly functioning drawbridge on Sir Goony’s Castle combined together created an unplayable hole. Despite these occasional and undesirable challenges, The Pink Putter and I found ourselves playing this specific course more than any of the other 2 courses on site. It’s safe to say it was easily our favorite set of 18 holes in Minnesota. Enjoy the trip down memory lane.
