Speedzone Los Angeles Mini Golf (Daytona Course) – City of Industry, CA

Played on March 3, 2020

Reviewed by Mr. Tee

Immediately before COVID became a reality in 2020, I was lucky to get a chance to binge on mini golf at some of my favorite courses in Southern California: Camelot, Golf N Stuff, and Castle Park. I had enough downtime on this solo vacation to fit in playing each of these courses numerous times over a 2 week period. The other part of the trip was going out to watch Season 2 of Holey Moley being filmed. A true mini golf vision quest. I was rooting on fellow mini golfers and taking in all of the sights of Holey Moley’s one-of-a-kind course. Feels fitting to add this new review today, as March 3rd marks one year to the date from my unique opportunity to test out the wild hole, Polcano, as you can see in this video.

Despite the fun of this whole trip, the only new course I managed to play in the Greater Los Angeles area was Speedzone. As I mentioned in the review of Speedzone’s Sebring course, I found out about this course from a former Holey Moley opponent and as always, I made sure to take in the opportunity to play and document a course I had never visited.

Rating

My review of the other 18 holes of this miniature golf complex covers my thoughts on the play. New turf would make this racing-themed course far more compelling and fun. The real standout is the massive putter at the entrance and the palm trees throughout the course. This is an ok course that could easily move up to a Birdie ranking with a little TLC.

Smiles for the sunshine and the discovery of a course I had not previously played
Easily one of my favorite course entraces
Clear signage to help you find your way through
Grown to appreciate signage that includes the par
Not sure why some of the “turf” on the course was this shade of black but it did not play well
Because the turf was so worn, these uphill putts require a good pace or you’ll have the ball return to the start over and over
But blue skies, palm trees and mini golf in Southern California can’t be beat
Guard rails are a nice tie in to the overall racing theme
Simple and identical structures to each of the 18-hole courses
Inside you can find the racing theme applying across the board including these bowling lanes

Pros

Palm trees and southern California foliage
Solid concrete walls with no seams
Overall hole and cup placement make for solid putting challenges
Huge putter sculpture outside of the course

Cons

Turf & surface is not in great shape
Not a ton of variety of holes
Could have better integrated the car/racing theme on and around the holes
