U-Puttz – Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada)

Recently remodeled indoor blacklight mini golf in a Winnipeg entertainment complex.

Following an enjoyable solo jaunt to The Golf Dome, I decided to wrangle up others who were part of the music exchange event during my second day in Winnipeg. I floated the idea of a mini golf outing during a workshop and got two takers in Jesse Stensby of Vitriol Promotion and Stephen Carroll of The Weakerthans and Manitoba Film & Music. A cab driver who didn’t recognize the name of the course and needed assistance from my mobile device eventually got Jesse and me from the heart of downtown Winnipeg to U-Puttz. Stephen met us there and proceeded to best us Minnesotans in a solid round of miniature golf.

Fortunate timing provided our crew from Minnesota, including a bunch of people from the Current, an opportunity to take in the Winnipeg Nuit Blanche art festival after a spectacular meal with our hosts. An idyllic short weekend north of the border. Can’t wait to go back!

Rating

Par – If you piece through our past reviews, you’ll find a pattern. We don’t favor black light mini golf courses over other standard themes or tropes. Feel like we’ve beaten home this point but we undeniably have our preference for what makes a special mini golf experience. There are some standout courses like the Monster Mini Golf locations we played as well as Two Tees and the two King Putt locations near Vegas. U-Puttz added several themed characters, obstacles, and elements that provide creativity in the playing area from a relatively flat carpeted space. The cup placement and layout provided a variety of challenging holes through both the prehistoric and under the ocean themes. A few obstacle elements and ramps were hastily repaired with duct tape. This quick fix hid the damage but the layers of duct tape created an equally frustrating challenge to the path of the ball towards the cup. It’s a solid indoor mini golf option, especially on those cold and dark Winnipeg winter days.
