The Golf Dome – Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada)

Quaint and charming indoor mini golf refuge in Manitoba’s capital city.

Minnesota shares a border with our friendly neighbors to the north, Canada, but inexplicably, I had not previously taken the opportunity to visit Winnipeg. The isolated capital of the Manitoba province is only a short flight or 5-hour drive from our Minneapolis home. During the Fall of 2017, I had the good fortune of being invited by Manitoba Music for a music exchange between the Twin Cities and Winnipeg. Live music, workshops, and connecting with the local music/arts community were all on the docket during a quick weekend getaway.

Whenever I travel these days, I search out any and all mini golf options. I flew in before the caravan of music folks made it to Winnipeg and ventured solo 20 minutes outside of downtown to an odd industrial/commercial part of town. In line with the experiences I’ve had over the years getting in the van with artists that I work with to play small shows, I discovered a gem off the beaten path.

Rating

Birdie – Situated under a dome next to a larger driving range/golf complex, these 18 holes manage to provide an above par mini golf experience. The theming and layout are beautifully random. Stuffed bear on a wagon with a flag. Mechanical oil rig. Classic loop. Handmade obstacles. Canadian landmarks. The unique charm of this course was elevated by my anticipation to play mini golf in another country but looking back on the photos, I’m struck by the little idiosyncrasies throughout. A few repairs and a new layer of paint wouldn’t be a bad addition but on its own, there is a lot to like about this miniature golf course.

A sandbox and surfboard must be a sight for sore eyes for locals during the brutal Winnipeg winters
First time seeing a tiered driving range
Roar!
Close-up of traffic on the bridge. Curious if this is a reference to traffic or a reference to the bridge trope we’ve seen on many courses
A yellow loop on green turf always looks lovely
Overview of the middle of the course includes a moose in the distance
Wear on homemade obstacles shows the course has been well used by putters
Not sure what’s going on here but I like it
Player activated obstacles are my favorite
My goto excited (but looking more surprised) selfie mode

Photo of the tokens used to select your ball. Posted this one specifically for Richard Gottfried. He loves a good token.
