Uppsala BGK Outdoor Adventure Golf – Uppsala, Sweden

Played April 18, 2023

Despite being early in the season for outdoor mini golf, I knew I had to play a round or two on this outdoor adventure golf course right after I landed in Sweden. I was eager to get a feel for this style of course designed by CityGolf given I was going to be competing on a similar course in Sundbyberg in my first-ever international competitive mini golf tournament. Course manager and legendary pro, Carl-Johan Ryner, shared some brief notes about the course and I was off for my very first experience on an outdoor CityGolf-designed adventure golf course. I waited to share this review now just in advance of the 2024 CityGolf Tour final being held on this course on September 14 & 15.

Rating

Despite my tired state, I was so delighted by this course that I set up my tripod and took a few videos that you can view above. I was immediately drawn to the holes with shoot-through elements, the massive loop, the bridge, and multiple paths to the cup throughout the course. Once I started playing, I was particularly intrigued by the playing structures (lanes) and how they were designed so you could get a hole-in-one on each hole and take a variety of paths that offered different types of risks. On first blush, this course may not grab a person who is looking for dinos, castles, and themed out environments but the experience of following the ball to the cup and mix of technical putting holes with creative gameplay will appeal to a variety of people. The drop pockets (the depressed area around the cup) on a few of the lanes make hole-in-one shots both more reliable and likely. Who doesn’t love getting a hole-in-one? The structures built on a compacted sand base hold form well and allow you to create more consistent and subtle breaks that are international and consistent. On top of that, the platforms offer great accessibility by wheelchair. As I finish this review, I’m eager to return to Uppsala to compete on this course in the near future.
