Walker Art Center’s Skyline Mini Golf 2022 – Minneapolis, MN

Played on July 1, 2022

This is the 11th iteration of the artist-designed mini golf course the Walker. We’ve reviewed most of the years between 2013-2021  and both The Pink Putter and I played the 2008 version of the course before we actually met. With the opportunity to play again this year, we were eager to see which holes from previous years returned and to play the new hole added.

Rating

We repeat this each year but we’re entirely biased when it comes to this course because we had a hand in helping design three of the ten holes on this course. This is the description of the course on the Walker’s website:

“Celebrating its 15th anniversary, Skyline Mini Golf returns to the Walker rooftop this summer! The ten-hole, artist-designed course features a new design created by the Asian American Organizing Project’s Youth Action Team called Always Have Been Sewn. The work is based upon a treasured and historical Hmong item called a paj ntaub (pronounced “pan dow”), or story cloth.”

We love how the new hole looks but the play of it was a little tricky as you can see in the video above. You don’t use a putter at all but it’s a blast and much like the rest of the course, it looks great. Hope the Walker continues to update and bring back this course long into the future!

Color Wheel became Hole #6 this year. It’s definitely challenging and one you’ll want to play after you’ve had a chance to putt on some easier holes.
A revised version of “Be Your Own Sculpture” returned. This was on many iterations of the course starting in 2013 and puts you and your opponents right in the action
The first six holes of the course
Hole #7 was redesigned for last year’s course and while we love the plinko, we wish there was a little bit more to the lower putting area
Last three holes including our “Piece of Cake” as the final hole on the course
Asian American Organizing Project’s Youth Action Team’s “Always Have Been Sewn” is the one new hole to the 2022 course
Equally love the illustrations and the color scheme
Story behind the hole that we encourage you to check out when you play

Pros
Distinct and unique styled holes
Vibrant colors
Variety of gameplay

Cons
Less than 18 holes
The gameplay is limited due to the smaller size of the holes
Because they were all made by the same fabrication shop, there is a slight lack of distinct personality between each hole
