In August of 2021, we took a vacation on Long Beach Island with my family, something we did often when I was a kid but hadn’t done in at least 20 years. I was excited to visit all of the mini golf courses on the island, one of those being the appropriately named Island Golf. We got to to play this course twice – the first time was early on Tuesday morning with one of my best friends Maggie and her two kiddos, Q and J. The second time was for their weekly Wednesday tournament, which we played with David Biggy (of Can You Beat Biggy? and Holey Moley fame) and William, who we had met earlier that morning at the Hartland Golf tournament just down the road. And I was lucky enough to take home the winning trophy for that week’s tournament!
Rating
Island Golf is everything you’d expect in a shore town mini golf course, minus a big water feature. It’s got fun fiberglass animals, tiki heads, a central pirate ship and ship-inspired holes including a captain’s wheel and anchor. The gameplay is mostly flat with some hills, angles, and moving obstacles where timing is everything. The entire course is very clean and well maintained. The only thing holding this back from a hole-in-one rating is its lack of cohesion – while the whole place has a beach vibe, island golf has a hard time focusing on one central theme.
Pros
Fun themed elements
Family-friendly
Challenging (but not too challenging) gameplay with good variety and lots of chances for a hole-in-one
Cons
Lacks a bit of cohesion
