Capt’n J’s Miniature Golf – Superior, WI

Played on August 29, 2020

Reviewed by the Pink Putter

Mr. Tee and I knew there were a handful of mini golf courses in the Duluth area of Minnesota that we had not played, so we took a day trip in late August 2020 to explore them. Just over the river and about 10 minutes west of Duluth is the neighboring Superior, WI and home to Capt’n J’s Miniature Golf.

Rating

Open since 1982, this quaint 18 hole mini golf course on Barker’s Island is nestled right on the Superior Bay next to the SS Meteor. Scenic views, a giant ship, hand painted signage and short but fun and challenging game play add up to give this course a 4 out of 5 rating. While Capt’n J’s doesn’t have a particular theme, it did have a lot of random and fun elements like flags, painted concrete, colorful signage, a mini waterfall and flower pots dotted throughout. There was definitely a homey mom and pop feel to this well maintained course. Plus we love the tagline “Thanks for Puttzn’ Around!” If you’re in the Duluth area, we definitely recommend crossing the bridge to play a round at Capt’n J’s.

Mr. Tee Update Summer 2023

While the ambiance, layout, and location continue to make this course charming, the condition of the turf and gameplay on a few holes, especially the volcano hole, make this a bit more frustrating than it should be especially if you’re looking to play competitively on this course.
