Molten Mountain – Myrtle Beach, SC (Pele’s Revenge)

Played October 11, 2019 with O Street (Rudy), The Putting Penguine (Mandy), Randy Rice, and Mark “Highlighter” Novicki

Reviewed by Mr. Tee

Immediately after my improbably 7 hole-in-ones at Captain Hooks, our band of merry mini golfers made our way across town to Molten Mountain. Rudy and Aaron from O-Street had already taken in this joint and highly recommended it. Aaron opted to practice over at one of the official Masters courses so Highlighter, Rudy, and I met up with Randy Rice and Mandy from The Putting Penguin. Given the high level of competitiveness in our crew, we faced off on the outdoor course, Pele’s Revenge, for one of the plastic trophies sold in the gift shop.

Rating

Birdie – A Tropical themed mini golf course centered around an oversized volcano is a relatively common trope to find around the world but surprisingly, Myrtle Beach has a minimum of 3 courses of this style alone amongst the 25+ miniature golf complexes in the city. Hawaiian Rumble is by far the most impressive course in this tiki-themed style but much like Aloha Mini Golf, this facility offers well above average indoor and outdoor options. The outdoor course has moderately long and relatively challenging holes surrounded by smooth cement walls. Mischief spinners are available at all of the outdoor holes to throw in a monkey wrench to the gameplay if you so choose. The red lava themed water, caves, and tiki poles bring an extra level of immersion into the theme that the best courses provide. A strong mini golf option for friends and family.

Molten Mountain Website

Pros

Massive 50-foot fire spouting volcano, waterfalls, tiki poles, red water, and black lava rock styled walls nailed the tropical theme
Lush palm trees, caves, and tropical plants help you feel immersed in the environment
Great signage throughout the course
Long and solid challenges on all of the holes

Cons

Could use some light maintenance
Like Aloha, it falls just short of being a hole-in-one due to the volume of courses in this style in Myrtle Beach
