Back in April 2016, we had just installed Lil Golf at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and were driving back home to Minneapolis. On our road trip, we decided to take a short detour in Lincolnwood, IL, a suburb just northwest of Chicago. We met up with friends Bob, Urs and their son William to play a round at Novelty Golf and have some lunch. Unfortunately the Bunny Hutch (a small drive-in style restaurant next to Novelty Golf) was closed that day, so we ended up grabbing a bite off site.
Rating:
Hole-in-One – Classic kitsch, moving obstacles, bright colors, funky decor and unique gameplay all add up to make Novelty Golf stand out from the rest. This is your classic, goofy mini golf course complete with knockoffs of licensed characters, hand-painted signage and fiberglass dinosaurs and animals. There are two 18-hole courses on site. During this trip, we only had a chance to play one, but we definitely are going to make a trip back next time we’re in town to play the other. And next time you’re at Novelty Golf, look for our sticker on their ticket window.
Pros:
Classic kitsch
Foot pedals activate moving parts
Oversized and novel obstacles
Fun, unique game play
Hand-painted signage
Cons:
Age of the course evident through some wear and tear
Nerdy Notes:
- 2 courses with 18 holes plus bonus 19th, Par 50
- Rubber covered putters
- No flags in holes
- Bonus 19th hole collects balls
- Foots pedals activate moving obstacles
