If you’ve ever flown into Myrtle Beach’s airport, you’ve likely driven by a massive 50-foot Mayan temple off King’s Highway. You’re not in the wrong city; you’re just passing by the Cancun Lagoon mini golf facility. The spectacle is hard to ignore, and I had high expectations based on the course’s curb appeal. Based on the descriptions of the courses provided by the staff person, it seemed that the two 9-hole courses, which were half indoor and half outdoor, were quite similar. I opted to play Pakal’s Adventure (starting indoors) first and then moved onto the Cancun course.

I’ve been slow to knock out the last few reviews from the mini golf binge I embarked on in 2021 after competing in my first Masters. Part of the reason is that I didn’t want to do all of the Myrtle Beach reviews at once, and the other is that a few of the courses didn’t stand out among the high volume of options in Myrtle Beach. Cancun Lagoon’s size and scale from afar give it an otherworldly presence, and the audio and lighting effects indoors add to the theming, but the courses themselves don’t feel particularly special. It didn’t help that I visited in October during the offseason. I encountered no other patrons playing, and lots of debris on the outdoor courses. There was an okay variety of gameplay across the courses, but I thought in the moment that nothing stood out as special or unique aside from the two fun plinko holes facing the street. This is all in context with the variety of special and more memorable courses in Myrtle Beach, like Captain Hook’s and Mt. Atlanticus. In most cities, this would be an above-average mini golf course worthy of visiting often, but in return trips to Myrtle Beach, I haven’t felt compelled to play the 3rd 9-hole course. In advance of playing this course, I had expectations that this would be something extraordinary. In the end, it is amongst an endless number of options in the capital of mini golf that is especially compelling if you are staying near the airport or want to get away from the elements by playing their indoor holes.
