As I mentioned in my review of Triple Play, I was in the Tucson, Arizona area for an extended period and decided to explore all of the mini golf offerings around the area. On the north side of town near the Cataline Foothills, I found a Family Entertainment Center called Funtasticks. From what I could tell online, they had two full courses so I swung on over during the middle of the week when I expected it to be quiet so I could soak in some sun and sink some putts.
Rating
Both of these courses have a bit of a southwestern flare and theme. I loved the immersive elements and am reminded of similar West Coast style courses like Golf N Stuff. The putting areas are massive and there is a good variety of hole layouts where you have to take more straight-forward putts and others where you have to play rebound shots or putt uphill. The caves and water features on the blue course along with the skee ball styled final holes all looked excellent. The big issue with this course was the gameplay. As you’ll see in the photos, the course in January 2022 was in sub-optimal condition. The carpet was ripped and chewed up on both courses. In several cases, it would impact the movement of the ball to the cup. A few of the cups had seen better days as well. A few of the tee-off mats were mangled as well. Additionally, several of the themed environments and characters like the snake on the blue course were badly damaged. In most cases, this didn’t necessarily impact the gameplay but the overall experience would have been so much better had the course been in better condition. If this was a run-of-the-mill course, I would have given this a sub-par review but I feel like the imagination of the course helps keep the course at par. I can only hope that the course operators decide to put in some effort to repair and fix up the facilities as they are much needed for this course to remain playable and average. I would absolutely go out of my way to play it again if they made the repairs.
