Sometimes when you drive by a mini golf course in the off-season, it is hard to tell whether it’s just in bad shape or if it’s permanently closed. It was very clear with the nearby Snake River Mini Golf was out of business but neighboring courses that closed in subsequent years like Adventure Falls were in operation and similar shape to Wild Water and Wheels. Based on the property’s condition that I could see from the exterior, the entire course and waterpark looked like it had seen better days but wasn’t completely hopeless. Sadly, my searches for information on the course later confirmed that the course had closed permanently.
Press Release from November 2022:
To our loyal customers, season pass holders, Surfside Beach locals and tourists alike, we regret to inform you that Wild Water & Wheels has decided to close our business. After more than 30 wonderful years in the Surfside Beach community, we will not be opening our doors for another season.
It was hard to see much of the course this 2017 trip advisor review did not have kind words for the course:
“As for the bad… do NOT pay for the mini-golf attraction. They should be ashamed at taking money from patrons to ‘play’ this course as the carpets are in horrible condition on most of the holes of this course.”
Take a look for yourself. It doesn’t look demonstrably different than many of the courses in Myrtle Beach with the traditional red bricking and green turf combined with an all too common seafaring or pirate theme. The entire property has been completely leveled at this point as you can see in the video at the bottom of this post.
