Bryan and Neil make up the fun and funky Minneapolis duo known for their all ages music and dance. This past April, they debuted their new hit, Putt Putt, Butt Butt, as a song on their latest album titled “Slow Clap.” In celebration, we wanted to interview them about their new song and favorite mini golf things.
First off, what is your favorite putter and ball color combo?
B: Definitely want to always choose a low profile stainless steel putter. One that looks really worn. And royal blue ball. It speaks to me.
N: My favorite putter is whichever putter is the longest. I’m 6’4” and the days of my youth and being able to putt pain-free are behind me.
What is your favorite type of mini golf theme?
B: Haven’t gotten to go to many that are one theme, but I think under the sea theme is the greatest theme.
N: I played at a lot of “Pirates Cove” locations around the Midwest growing up. I also really enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom. It lends itself well to the water features and the caves found at a lot of courses. I dig it, yarrr!
If there was a Koo Koo Kanga Roo themed mini golf course, what song(s) could you see becoming a playable hole(s)?
B: Wow this would be so awesome. I want to achieve this level with our band. All I Eat Is Pizza, Pirate Prep, Sticky Icky (For oooozing honey dripping on your ball), Classic Dinosaur Stomp with old school dinos, Tons more. But what we would need to make is a super meta hole about Putt Putt Butt Butt thats a mini golf hole about playing mini golf. I hope it would go deep.
N: We made an entire album about Panera Bread called Fast Casual. I’d love to play a mini golf course outside or a Panera location where each hole features a different item from their massive menu.
Can you talk a little about your inspiration and/or process for writing and performing Putt Putt Butt Butt?
B: You two were the main inspiration. When someone is really into a thing at their core it sticks with me, brings me joy. We always were trying to find the right thing to say that would make you two laugh since you are the pros. Sounds cheesy but it’s the truth. Also mini golf is just so darn fun.
N: I’ve always loved the ridiculous family fun of mini golf so it seemed like a good fit with our band. There’s so much going on yet it’s a simple game. I’m very competitive with my siblings so we always had intense outings. Mini golf courses are just such a wild mishmash of wild stuff. Seems like a fun place to dance.
Between the two of you, who has the better dance moves?
B: I think I can free style better, but Neil creates all the moves that make it into the videos.
N: Bryan does. He studies boy band moves and had all the Darrin’s Dance Grooves VHS tapes.
