Played multiple times between October 10-13, 2019
Reviewed by Mr. Tee. Special appearances by Randy Rice, Pat Sheridan and Mandy Ranslow of The Putting Penguin, Robin Ventura, Mark “Highlighter” Novicki, Aaron Kaminski of O-Street Mini golf and Allan Cox. Plus brief cameos of a few putters that participated in the 2019 USPMGA (United States Pro Mini Golf Association) Mini Golf Masters.
A number of the best putters in the world steel their focus on this single course as it is played 5 times by each competitor during the 3-day annual Masters each October. Less than a mile from Hawaiian Village on King’s Highway (US-17), you’ll easily spot this course as the 40-foot volcano in the middle of the 18-holes is hard to miss. I took in some practice rounds with friends competing in the Masters and then finished off my first ever trip to Myrtle Beach on this course with my fellow Holey Moley alum Randy Rice. Completing my miniature golf binge on this epic course in the middle of the capital city of mini golf was the right move.
Rating
Hole-in-One – Easily my favorite of the trio of tropical-themed mini golf complexes operated by the Detweiler family in Myrtle Beach. Not only is the volcano bigger but the entire palm tree-filled course gives this place a fully immersive experience that exceeds Aloha & Hawaiian Village. The holes are bigger, longer, and exquisitely maintained. The overwhelming amount of putting options in Myrtle Beach makes it difficult for any single course to stand out but this is a must-visit and play course if you’re in town.
The Putter King from Australia, Allan Cox, offers a path to a perfect 18 on this course
Pros
Smartly executed tropical theme
Massive 40′ volcano rumbles & displays real fire throughout the day/night
A course where you can measure yourself against the best mini golfers in the world
Cup placement makes for challenging play
The immersive journey through the course feels substantial
The turf and hole are well maintained
Cons
Tournament style courses aren’t for everyone and can be especially challenging
