Hole-In-One – A must see trip down memory lane.
In the Summer of 2018, I was on a family beach trip in the Florida panhandle. We spent a day on the touristy strip of Panama City Beach and were in need of some mini golf action. I contacted my trusty Couple of Putts pals asking for any recommendations. Before I could even finish saying “Panama City,” Mr. Tee insisted “GOOFY GOLF!” Being a novice in the field of mini golf, I was unaware of its legacy, but upon pulling into the parking lot, it quickly became clear why this was THE place to play. Both courses were filled with retro obstacles, many in bad shape, but all in full spirit. It’s really like stepping back in time.
As far as course décor goes, it doesn’t much more classic than the giant dinosaur and windmill. The holes were just challenging enough for the adults and kids in our group with few to no duds. Not sure if there’s a term for a mini golf hole where all the players get frustrated enough to call it quits and move on to the next hole, but yeah… none of those here.
Aside from the poor condition of some of the sculptures (How many hurricanes has this place survived throughout its 60 years?), some of the artwork hasn’t really withstood the test of time. Does the racist “Chinaman” covered in fire ants still need to be around? Probably not.
All in all, Goofy Golf is packed with must-see nostalgic fun if you’re planning to be in or near Panama City.
Pros
Nostalgic
Fun
Near the beach and tons of other amusements
Cons
Poor condition
Haunted by sculptures created in a less culturally-sensitive era
Nerdy Notes
- This course was originally established in 1959
- If you want to dig into the history of this classic course, we highly recommend Tim Hollis’s, The Minibook of Minigolf
