Documented November 6, 2017, by Mr. Tee
Drive By – Since 2015 I’ve been making an annual pilgrimage to the homeland of Björk and numerous other musical geniuses for the annual Iceland Airwaves. The expansive eclectic citywide music festival takes place in November. The sheer volume of music I consume in four days gives me the energy to sustain through the Minnesota winters. I’ve been equally bewitched by the thermally heated pools, charming people, vibrant colors, and breathtaking topography.
Each year I’ve attempted to track down mini golf options around the country to no avail. Friends shared pictures of a temporary mini golf course near Siglufjordur in the north so we knew the game was a known entity on the island. An internet deep dive landed me on two locations near the city center. Coordinating a visit to the courses near Reykjavíc was challenging because November is the off-season for tourists and miniature golf. None of the courses were open.
Undeterred by previous failed attempts, I succeeded in 2017. My first discovery was the 9-hole homemade course at Laugardalslaug. Oddly enough, I had been to this massive swimming and sporting facility in 2015. Little did I know there was a charming course steps away from a colorful waterslide and thermal pools.
2022 Update: I revisited the pool on a return trip for the 2022 Airwaves and I was sad to discover that this mini golf course is no longer outdoors near the pools and is likely permanently gone. I couldn’t find any place online noting the course still being there and given the condition of the course last time, I imagine it was in no condition to be played anymore. Fortunately, I was able to find 2 more courses I had not previously on this same trip in Reykjavik and one addition course 1.5 hours north of the city.
